On the eve of the Ashes and with the Scotch First XI about to embark on an England Tour overseas to test their skills against English school teams, there is no better time than to recognise Scotch College’s remarkable success in the world of cricket.

In 2010 it was discovered that Scotch had 11 Test Cricketers, which was more than from any other Australian school.

 

Captain:         Joseph Darling CBE

Born: 21 November 1870, Glen Osmond, South Australia

Scotch: 1883-84 (left to Prince Alfred College, Adelaide, 1884-87)

Died: 2 February 1946, Hobart, Tasmania

Debut Test: Sydney, 14–20 December 1894

Captain: Test teams touring England, 1899, 1902 and 1905.

Final Test: The Oval, 14–16 August 1905

Runs: 1,657

Average: 28.56

High score: 178

Of note: Debuted with fellow Old Boy Charles Edward McLeod; One of Wisden’s 1899 Cricketers of the Year
