OSCA Annual Dinner 2010 - They could have dined all night!

One of the best OSCA Annual Dinners ever! That was the landslide vote at the 2010 dinner on Wednesday 9 June at Leonda, which featured a memorable address by former Prime Minister, the Hon John Howard

Mr Howard’s speech, responding to the toast to the guests by former Howard Government Minister the Hon David Kemp (’59), was spellbinding, and earned a prolonged standing ovation from the 575 Old Boys and guests.

John Howard’s riveting address centred on the life of illustrious Old Scotch boy Sir John Monash (1878), focusing on Monash’s role as a soldier and as a citizen. Monash overcame prejudice (though he did not experience it at Scotch College) to become an outstanding leader in military and civilian life. Mr Howard spoke of the decisive battle of Hamel, on 4 July 1918, in which Australian and American troops fought together for the first time. He said Monash, arguably the greatest World War I general, planned the battle to perfection, minimising loss of Australian and American life, and achieving total success in just 93 minutes. Concluding his address, Mr Howard praised the ‘collegiate spirit’ evident at the dinner, and said that Scotch had made an ‘enormous contribution’ to Australia, and had ‘done our nation proud’, for which it was ‘owed a debt of thanks’.

Cordner-Eggleston Cup

When: 23 July 2010 @ 2.00 pm| Where: Edwin Flack Park, Todd Road (Melways ref 56 G2; (Download Location map)

Scotch College is defined by some key occasions. One of these is the annual Cordner-Eggleston cup football match. Whether an avid footballer or a keen sideliner, the Cordner-Eggleston cup marks a moment in the hearts of Scotch boys both past and present.

This year’s 1st XVIII side has shown immense courage and solid improvement. Highlights include an excellent win over a strong Carey side followed by close loses to top teams. Captain Gene Van Den Broek and Deputy Vice Captain Nick Jamieson form a top midfield duo in the competition with outstanding performances each week. Key forward Ned Walmsley is in good form and will be firing after kicking a tremendous five goals against top side St.Kevins.

This year, on behalf of the present boys, we invite (and strongly encourage!) all Old Scotch boys, accompanied with friends and famil,y to come and support them during this momentous occasion.

Old Scotch Clubs

Old Scotch Football Club

The Old Scotch Football Club has had a disappointing season to date, but three strong wins against Old Melburnians, St Bedes Mentone and Marcellin in successive weeks have ensured that the Club will remain in Premier section again in 2011. The seniors, seconds and thirds are all mid table. The Under 19s are second, having won the last 11 games in a row. For more information visit www.oldscotchfc.com.au.

Koomerang Ski Club

With the start of the ski season this weekend and snow starting to fall both naturally and from snowmaking, Koomerang is fully geared up for what we hope will be a great season.

Work has been carried out once again at all four lodges to varying degrees and they are all looking fantastic and ready to go for the season ahead. While minor works were carried out at Buller, Hotham and Thredbo, our lodge at Falls Creek underwent more extensive changes. There have been extensive discussions with the management at Mount Hotham as we strive to upgrade the lodge to the standard now expected from our members after our successful upgrade at Thredbo. We are pleased to report that a new 15-year lease has been secured and there has been an offer to extend that lease for a further 35 years upon completion of a redevelopment of the site.

As a new initiative this year, the committee will offer members discounted bed rates with a 40% discount prior to 25 June and a 30% discount after 6 September. Details such as these booking rates and other information on the Koomerang Ski Club can be found on our new website www.koomerang.com.au. Membership of Koomerang Ski Club is open to all Old Scotch Boys and their families.

Koomerang in Sydney

A Koomerang lunch function was recently held in Sydney for our NSW members. It was an excellent opportunity for members to meet other members of the Club away from the ski fields. A most successful and worthwhile occasion with special thanks to Carol & Doug Fenton-Lee.

Old Scotch Tennis Club

The Old Scotch Tennis Club currently has 64 members and sponsors two Pennant teams -  one of Scotch College students and another of younger Old Boys. Both have been very competitive. The formation of the second Pennant team consisting of the younger Old Boys is a good sign for the Club as a forerunner to the recruitment of additional younger members.
The John Hill Memorial Tournament which had 44 participants was held in April as were the Club’s Singles and Doubles Championships.

There are from 16 to 20 members playing Social Tennis Doubles on a Saturday afternoon.
The Club welcomes visitors at any time so they can establish after playing on at least three occasions, whether they would like to apply to join the Club. However if someone wishes to come for a one-off hit they would be also most welcome.

Any enquiries about the Club including membership should be directed to the Club’s Secretary Alan Lewis on phone 95714311 or email aflewis@netspace.net.au

Cardinal Club

Four of the First VIII rowers have elected to compete in the Fawley Challenge Cup at the Henley Royal Regatta to be held from the 1 – 4 July.  This is a challenging knockout regatta.  The boys have been training consistently throughout the winter months.  We wish the boys and their coach Tom Woodruff well at this Regatta.

Tom Woodruff the First VIII coach is being kept very busy coaching both the Scotch boys and the Australian Under 23 VIII. Our congratulations go to Tom for his selection to this role.

Old Scotch Pipes & Drums Club

In April, the Pipes & Drums undertook a double-share of civic duty in fielding a full band to play for both the Croydon RSL and the Sorrento RSL ANZAC marches. The band’s Sorrento performance even scored a cameo appearance on Channel 7 News. OSP&D members enjoyed getting out on the street to lead the march at both events, and afterwards enjoyed the warm camaraderie and generous ‘refreshments’ put on by RSL club members in inimitable style.

The Pipes & Drums were once again scheduled to welcome guests to the OSCA Annual Dinner on June 9th – celebrating the first anniversary of its historic public debut at the 2009 dinner – and piped in the ex-Prime Minister of Australia, the Hon. Mr John Howard, and the haggis (with a traditional 'A man’s a man for a’ that'), along with several other performance duties during the evening. The band even presented a rousing bagpipe version (with its own special drum score) of the College Song, to which some guests even sang along. Wrapping things up by formally piping out the official party, the Old Scotch pipe band is now becoming a something of a feature at OSCA events.

If anyone would like to request the band (or a piper/drummer) play at other functions – such as alumni dinners, weddings, memorials, or other OSCA club events – just call Brian Symington (OSP&D Pipe Major) on (03) 9818 8414 to discuss arrangements.

Visit the band's website at: www.oldscotchpipeband.net.au.

Old Scotch Film Society

Following OSCA Council's approval of the Society's application to become affiliated with OSCA, the next step is to proceed towards incorporation with a application to the Victorian Department of Consumer Affairs .
A special meeting of members of the Society will be called to approve the necessary rules of incorporation, before application can be made. We expect the the Society will become incorporated towards the end of 2010.
Currently, the Society has around 260 members, and presents 15 films each year, in the Science lecture auditorium at the School.

Old Scotch Heritage Club

The Club welcomes Bruce Brown as its President from the start of the 2010 year. Past President, Alex Sloan, has been invited to continue participation in our Committee deliberations, with his experience and involvement in the progressive establishment of the Scotch College Museum Trust, which will provide the direction for funding and planning for the School Museum, and for School Heritage conservation.

Old Scotch Bowls Club

The Club is in winter recess, but is about to issue the new season's schedule of games to members, for the 15 matches over the Spring and Summer of 2010/2011, commencing in September.
Our Membership is around 55 bowlers.

Old Scotch Soccer Club

The Old Scotch Soccer Club is moving into an exciting period down at H.A. Smith Reserve, both on and off the pitch. The most positive of these would have to be the number of new young members who have thrown themselves into the club, across all five teams, ensuring the club will continue to grow throughout the coming years.

The Old Scotch Soccer Club is having a stellar season, currently sitting atop the Mens Provisional League Division One competition with 7 wins, 4 draws and 1 loss. On the pitch, at the midway point of the season, The Seniors are approaching new territory. Sitting atop the Provisional League Division 1, all squad members will attempt to reach State League Division 3. The Reserves had begun to string a few results together, and sit mid-table, whilst for the first time ever, the club now fields 3 Sunday teams. These three teams are also finding their feet, and pushing up their respective ladders.

News off the pitch includes the highly anticipated upgrades to H.A. Smith Reserve and the building of new rooms. For the time being, in an effort to keep off the deteriorating pitch, Old Scotch will play down on the McKendrick, at Scotch College.

It really is a promising time for the Club. For more information visit www.ossc.com.au.
